About Us The concept of a Hispanic association was born after a group of Hispanic-Americans converged at an annual Hispanic festival in Huntsville, Alabama. Mrs. Rosie Douglas founded the Hispanic festival to kick off the official celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The group envisioned an organization that would improve the educational and economic opportunities amongst Hispanics in North Alabama. In September of 2002, the group incorporated as a nonprofit organization and became officially known as the Alabama Hispanic Association. The Association continues to host annual Hispanic Festivals but today it encompasses many cultural activities as well as programs that provide needed services to Hispanics in North Alabama.
The Association’s primary goal is to assist North Alabama Hispanic
families with educational and economic development. We facilitate access to
medical and legal services, provide translation services of essential documents
and furnish general
AHA establishes mentoring and tutoring programs for Hispanic students and organizes English-language skill training classes. We compile information about educational opportunities, availability of scholarships, medical and legal guidance. AHA also promotes cultural heritage awareness through social activities by hosting Latin dances and by sponsoring annual Hispanic festivals. The Latin dances promote the Hispanic culture through its music, dance and hospitality. The Hispanic festival brings together the diverse Hispanic groups in North Alabama and educates the public on the contributions and achievements that Hispanics have made throughout the United States. |
